A great sign was seen, and it was seen in Heaven. God’s Temple had opened up in Heaven and the ‘Ark of His Covenant’ had become visible. For the remnant of Israel, this is the assurance of total victory.
Revelation 12
Day 182: She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.
What is the image, the ‘sign’ of the woman in Heaven with the sun and stars and ready to give birth supposed to make clear? Who does she represent? Israel? The nation Israel, which has always been pregnant and was called to bring forth, to give birth to the Messiah?
Day 183: A great sign appeared in Heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.1
What does the celestial ‘sign’ in Heaven of the pregnant ‘woman’ who is to deliver a baby-boy, a son point to? The chosen people of Israel who in the end brought forth the Christ?
Day 184: And another sign appeared in Heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems.
Just as the ‘sign of the woman’ cannot be nailed down to a particular moment in the history of redemption, that of the ‘dragon’ cannot be either. The ‘woman’ is Eve, Mary, the Church, Israel, Jerusalem that is above, the mother of us all.
Day 185: And his tail swept away a third of the stars of Heaven, and threw them to the earth.
We have been able to see how the ‘signs’ of the ‘woman’ and the ‘dragon’ show us the spiritual background of the things that are happening on earth. The background for the chaos and tribulation on earth…
Day 186: And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. And she gave birth to a Son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
In the Book of Revelation, the adversary, Satan, is revealed and becomes more visible. He grows ever more violent in his opposition, because the end of his power approaches as the revelation of Jesus Christ increases.
Day 187: And the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she might be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
‘A viper will come forth from the root of the serpent and its fruit will be a flying dragon’, so Isaiah says. The dragon (always) stands in front of the ‘woman and her child (children), to devour them, for she has also ‘the rest of her offspring’.
Day 188: And there was war in Heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. And the dragon and his angels waged war and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in Heaven.
What a tremendous moment! The climax has come! The devil and his angels are finally thrown out of Heaven – once and for all. The devil has not been able to achieve anything.
Day 189: And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
The word ‘devil’ comes from ‘diabolos‘, which stands for scrambler or blasphemer, divider. (This means literally throwing everything in a mess, in a jumble). The devil, the ‘dragon’, the old serpent, Satan (adversary) and his angels are cast down to earth.
Day 190: And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
First of all the devil sowed doubt about the Word of God, and so Eve let go of that Word slightly. The devil then pressed on further. ‘It is absolutely not true that you will die, on the contrary!
Day 191: Then I heard a loud voice in Heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the Kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.”
The devil has to bite the dust time and again in the history of Creation. John has seen that divine principle in the Heavenly ‘sign’. Perhaps Satan did already bite the dust between Genesis 1 verses 1 and 2 when he was cast out of Heaven onto the earth…
Day 192: And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.
The victory over the powers of darkness can nevertheless mean your physical death. “I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
