Although the Authorised Version says, “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea”, the better reading of the verse seems to be the one of the NASB and NIV: “And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore…
Revelation 13
Day 199: The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.1
The last thing we hear of the ‘dragon’ is that he is standing here, on the shore of the ‘sea’, the sea of nations. To achieve its goal, the ‘dragon’ hatches a stinking egg, for a ‘beast’ rises out of the sea.
Day 200: And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority.
When you read the above verse and look at Daniel’s four creatures, which indicate four successive world powers, the similarities stand out immediately. In Daniel’s case the first creature looks like a lion…
Day 201: One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”1
John sees the ‘beast’ rising up out of the water of the ‘sea of nations’: first the ten horns with the crowns, then the seven heads with the names of blasphemy, just like the Roman emperors were themselves honoured as ‘gods’ in their time…
Day 202: There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him.
The title ‘anti-Christ’ only occurs in the last books of the New Testament, in the epistles of John.1 It is the characteristic of the ‘last hour’.2 The spirit of the ‘anti-Christ’ was already at work in John’s day too, and many ‘anti-Christs’ have appeared…
Day 203: And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His Tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in Heaven.
In Daniel’s vision the fourth beast is also said to have ten horns. “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it.
Day 204: And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.
This is stated in a somewhat matter of fact fashion, but what terrible consequences these words have. The Jewish people are defeated. Who can read the book by Flavius Josephus The Jewish War with dry eyes, about the Romans’ war against the Jews in 66–70 AD…
Day 205: And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.
The whole world population will worship the beast—every tribe and nation and language and people, worldwide, for this is what the expression in the Book of Revelation means. There is no escape, nowhere to turn…
Day 206: Whoever has ears, let them hear.1
The Lamb that was slain is the guarantee of the victory of God’s children, even though for some, that victory is attained through martyrdom. “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” That call is always heard when the glorified Christ addresses one of the seven churches, to His Church of all ages.
Day 207: “If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed.” This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.1
There is a problem with the text of this verse. It can be translated in two different ways and one finds these differences already in the oldest manuscripts. The first version is the one quoted above, which is also similar to the Authorised Version…
Day 208: Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf.
The first beast comes up out of the sea (of nations); the second beast comes up out of the earth. The ‘spirit out of the ground’ NIV translates, out of the earth NASB translates. A spirit/ghost that pretended to be Samuel also came up out of the earth.
Day 209: …and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from Heaven to the earth in full view of the people. Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast…1
The second beast looks like the Lamb, but it speaks like the ‘dragon’, against the Father, and against the Son. It is later plainly called ‘the false prophet’. The coming of the ‘beast’ and the ‘false prophet’ form part of a worldwide ‘messianic’ expectation and hope for a world saviour.
