John has already been able in short, sharp strokes to paint the fall of Babylon, the judgment that is about to be meted out on the ‘whore’, ‘harlot’. She is the spiritual / religious forces of the ‘end time’, the apostate church, the end-time religion of unity.
Revelation 18
Day 265: After these things I saw another angel coming down from Heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illumined with his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! And she has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird.”
This is a different angel—not one of the seven angels with the seven bowl judgments. No explanation is given of the fact that he has great authority, but he brings Another Angel from Revelation 10:1 very much to mind—that Angel which we identified as Christ Himself—the Angel of the Lord Who Himself is called Lord.
Day 266: “For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality.”
Babylon’, which appeared to have been built to last for centuries, is going to fall. The ‘beast’ in which it placed its confidence is inspired by the ‘father of all lies’ and ‘the murderer from the beginning’—Satan, John 8:44.
Day 267: And I heard another voice from Heaven, saying, “Come out of her, My people, that you may not participate in her sins and that you may not receive of her plagues.”
Babylon’s opulence, extravagance, wealth and its moral unrighteousness are crying out to Heaven, like the innocent blood of Abel cried out from the face of the earth, Genesis 4:10, Hebrews 10:4. It is at its core anti-social, devoid of any sympathy for fellow human beings and the fellow nations of this world.
Day 268: …for her sins have piled up as high as Heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
The possibility that the ‘city of Babylon’ refers to a geographical location is looking less and less likely, though. Babylon’s spiritual principle, which indeed translates itself into actual cities, cultures and civilisations—but which is really a spiritual force—is coming increasingly to the fore.
Day 269: “Pay her back even as she has paid, and give back to her double according to her deeds; in the cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. To the degree that she glorified herself and lived sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning.”
Staying in Babylon means going down with Babylon. The reputation of the end-time ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’ has now become so great, and its sins so heavy, that the Lord descends to convince Himself personally that everything being said about it by the martyrs of the ‘great tribulation’…
Day 270: She says in her heart, “I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning. For this reason in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong.”
“Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us. Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.”
Day 271: And the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and lived sensuously with her, will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, “Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.”
Crocodile tears. Everyone has taken part and enjoyed the fun. Yet now the great settling of the accounts has come but no one reaches out to help the ‘woman’, the ‘whore’.
Day 272: And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargoes any more
The Babylon market has collapsed all of a sudden. The economic prosperity for which Babylon stood as guarantor is over. There are no more outlets for the products the merchants have been selling very profitably for many years.
Day 273: cargoes of gold and silver and precious stones and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, and every kind of citron wood and every article of ivory and every article made from very costly wood and bronze and iron and marble, and cinnamon and spice and incense and perfume and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and cargoes of horses and chariots and slaves and human lives.
Whoever looks up Ezekiel 27 will discover an impressive enumeration of the products that were traded through the commercial city and seaport of Tyre. Merchandise was brought in from the whole world.
Day 274: And the fruit you long for has gone from you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and men will no longer find them.
Here John describes a society where people have become merchandise. We do not need to look reproachfully at the ancient world in this respect, for there were still serfs in Russia in the nineteenth century, and more than a million African slaves in America.
Day 275: The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn
The merchants wept at first because no one was buying their cargo anymore1. They are now weeping because they are afraid they will be dragged down in Babylon’s pains. As soon as something goes wrong somewhere, lots of people who were involved up to the hilt…
